-> David, can you tell me why on occasion (not all the time) I'll see the
-> first line of a message (as quoted above) that seems to echo the subject
-> line of the message? And, why does it also place the "N" off to the right
-> hand side?
It is an "extended header" ... part of the v15.0 specification. It is
invisible to all v15.0-aware software. But non-v15.0 software still sees it.
You know the thing that assounds me though? The fact that people QUOTE the
darn thing! <grin>
People with non-v15.0-aware offline readers are seeing the line and, rather
than ignore it and quote only "relevant" portions of the message, they quote
the subject line too.
My guess is that the offline reader makes it "easier" to just copy an entire
message rather than pick out only relevant text to quote.
The trouble with quoting the extended header is that now it is no longer
invisible. Now everyone has to see it and it no longer serves any perhaps
because has been converted from an extended header into just plain ascii text
that is quoted in a message body.
Anyway, that explains why you are seeing it. You're either seeing it inside of
an offline mail reader, or you're seeing a "quote of it" after the offline mail
reader has made it visible.
